Jean M. de Cuba is a graduate of the University of Leiden, Netherlands (Master in Dutch Civil Law, 1994) and was admitted to the bar in 1994 after which he has consistently followed post graduate education, master classes, symposia and workshops with special mention of a specialization of bankruptcy and insolvency law at the Grotius Academy in Nijmegen, the Netherlands (2007), execution of wills (NOVEX 2019), settlement and liquidation of estates (FEIN 2019).
He has practiced law in Amsterdam, Curaçao and Aruba and throughout his career he has gained great experience in the civil commercial practice, both as an advisor and as a litigator, assisting both local and international clients, including governments, financial institutions, real estate developers, regulators, tax collectors and inspectors. He is regularly appointed by the Court of First Instance as trustee in (cross-border) bankruptcies and as administrator, liquidator or executor.
In addition to his work as a lawyer Jean M. de Cuba has acted as the Chairman of the Supervisory Board of the Aruban Civil Servants’ Pension Fund (“Ambtenaren Pensioenfonds van Aruba”, APFA) (2008-2012) and as Member of the Advisory Commission under the chairmanship of Mr. Dr. M. Oosting in an inquiry conducted by the “Wetenschappelijk Onderzoek en Documentatie Centrum” (Research and Documentation Center) (WODC), in the Netherlands on the state of affairs of governance of Aruba (“De staat van bestuur van Aruba, een onderzoek naar de deugdelijkheid van bestuur en rechtshandhaving”) (2011-2012).
He has furthermore acted as Member and as Chairman of Government appointed commissions to advise on new or revisions of existing (civil and corporate) legislation on numerous occasions, he has acted as Vice-dean (2009-2011), Treasurer (2014 – 2016) and as Dean of the Aruba Bar Association (2016-2018). During 2016 – 2019 Jean M. de Cuba was Board member and Chairman of Aruba Trade and Industry Association.
